Photogrammetry model of the SBD Dauntless of Pacific Beach, California (if you look close you will see a wolf eel in one of the piston cylinders).

Eighty years ago today, Aug 24 1943, US Navy radio man third class Richard H. Moore and Captain William Parks Jr. were on a routine training mission when something went horribly wrong and they crashed their SBD Dauntless BuNo 4563 into the Pacific Ocean off San Diego, California. Interesting perspective on the stern of the USS Ar

Interesting perspective on the stern of the USS Arkansas (BB-33) in Bikini Atoll.

This is the port side of the ship with props visible (inboard extending through the middle of the pic and the outboard on the left) and a ton of small fish. Note the sand in the "groove" in the hull. This wreck was very close to the epicenter of the second "Baker" atomic test. The massive force "dented" and "rippled" the 11+ inch thick armor plating in between the hull beams. The USS Arkansas served in both WW 1 and WW II and participated in both the Iwo Jima and Okinawa invasions. The detailed blog post about the USS Arkansas with more photos is at:

The "infamous" wall in the forward elevator shaft of the USS Saratoga (CV-3) in Bikini Atoll.

This is the entry point for most penetration dives on the Sara. One of my projects on my recent trip was to build a photogrammetry model to replace the previous photo which was really hard to "decipher" in my opinion. Hopefully this is a lot clearer and will help future divers. I have provided it to the Master Liveaboard crew. I think it is an interesting and cool use of photogrammetry. As promised, here is the full photogrammetry model of the USS Moray (SS-300) submarine from our recent expedition. The model took four dives and consists of 4,000 photos.

I’ve been working with the team at Atomontage to put three of my high resolution airplane wreck photogrammetry models online. We just completed a case study. Check it out:

They have added a "fog" effect so it almost is like you would feel when you dive a wreck whereby as you get closer, it gets more detail and color.

USS Moray (SS-300) Submarine

Last week I posted a photo of my dive gear getting ready for an epic and literally a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. We just got back from 5 dives on the USS Moray which is a Balao-class submarine in 190 feet of water off Wilson Cove in San Clemente Island. The area is restricted by the Navy 24 x7 x 365.

Tyler and I were able to secure special permission from the Navy and we are only the second dive team to ever dive the wreck and it has been 11 years since the original team dove it in 2012.

We are under a self-imposed “information embargo” for this trip, but I’m hoping it will be epic. You know it is going to be a good dive trip when your clothes and toiletries are 5% of the cargo load (lower right bag in the photo).

Two cameras, two housings, four video lights, two strobes, two drysuits, two sets of undergarments, two drysuit inflation bottles, three sets of rebreather tanks, three bailout tanks, scooter, miscellaneous dive gear, laptop, and spares for pretty much everything. One rEvo.

I've been doing a lot of work with very high resolution photogrammetry models. In this example, it is propeller from a wreck off Point Loma, California. When you zoom in, you can literally see the little follicles on each anemone.
