Wreck Interior Studies — Part V (USS Saratoga Mash-Up)

Introduction

This is my fifth post on efforts to document and display the interiors of shipwrecks. The previous posts included:

This study is somewhat unique and interesting and includes a collaboration with Sean Twomey from Sunken Media.

Sean and I got connected after he saw my post on the Airplanes of the USS Saratoga. He was headed to Bikini and wanted to collaborate on a few projects. He has an incredible talent for combining media types and “bringing photogrammetry to life.” I highly recommend spending some time on his website to see some of the cool projects he has worked on. He is also doing some unpublished work on wireframes for the “unknown” airplane on the Saratoga.

USS Saratoga Mixed Media Model

One of the projects Sean and I worked on together was combining some of my photogrammetry models of the Saratoga island and elevator shaft wall with his model of the Combat Information Center (CIC) and blueprints of the ship. The overall objective was to provide a visual description of where the CIC is inside the wreck and how to get to it.

Components

First, a view into the components of the mash-up model:

ComponentDescriptionVisual
“The Wall”This is the inside of the airplane elevator shaft and serves as the primary entry point into most of the USS Saratoga penetration dives.
The IslandThis is a marker point and well known area of the wreck and is the tower on the starboard side of the wreck next to the elevator shaft.
The Command Information CenterThe CIC is one of the most visited rooms in the Saratoga and is a relatively easy penetration dive. Sean built a photogrammetry model of this interior room.
Deck PlansThe Deck Plans are used for route planning on penetration dives and provide a deck-by-deck layout of the vessel. This screenshot is of the CIC and elevator area.

Combination Model

Below is the “Mash-Up” that Sean made of the four components mentioned above.

I think it is pretty amazing and will change how people think about dive briefings for interior penetration dives on wrecks. Below is a closeup of the route to take to get to the CIC:

Sean has also worked on a video that shows a diver following the path to get into the room which we hope to publish at some point.
