Georgia (Redondo Beach, California — 135 fsw)

There has been plenty published about the Georgia fishing boat (which was originally mis-identified as the Retriever). For background, I would recommend reading the California Wreck Divers web page on the Georgia / Retriever.

I had gone with Ray & Kyaa at Sundiver back up to the F4D Skyray in Santa Monica Bay to work on a better photogrammetry model for the upcoming book. That didn’t turn out so well due to the very limited visibility (more on that in another post).

After the dive on the Skyray, we scanned a bunch of targets but didn’t find anything worth diving. I had never seen the Georgia so we made a quick stop on the way home and I did a dive to build a photogrammetry model of the wreck.

We were running low on time so I didn’t spend a ton of time on the bottom but did get enough photos for a decent model. The wreck is pretty beaten up. There is a lot of debris around the two main parts of the wreck.

The model has 851 photos. It was complicated a bit by the soft coral on top of the pilot house which kept moving with the current as I took photos. Therefore, there are a few “holes” on the top of the cabin where photos wouldn’t align or lack of coverage due to moving coral.

Below are screen captures from the model and a link to the on-line version.

Thanks To…

As usual, thanks to Ray & Kyaa for taking me out to dive the Skyray and then the Georgia. It was a super long day and the food and friendship was fantastic. Much appreciated…

  1. Thank you Brett for all you do. Documenting the many wrecks and targets is fascinating and capturing important history. Thank you to Ray and Kyaa for taking you out to these targets so you can create these images.
